In this post, I’m sharing a few ways on how to wear an all black outfit to make it more elevated. It’s one of those looks that you really cannot mess up. In a recent post I share how it’s one of my favorites to put together for a more professional look. But without the right elements, an all black look can gravitate towards *whispers* boring.
I mentioned this tip in this Instagram post. Playing around with textures can help break up the look for the better. Especially if you are wearing a look where all the black pieces are the same shade of black, wearing items with different materials will help to bring more character to the overall look.
Accessories are you best friend when it comes to an all black outfit. In another post I shared how adding accessories to a sweater dress look can really transform the entire outfit. For example, in this look my Valentino belt really does draw your attention and helps to highlight the gold accents that are prevalent throughout the entire look. Belts, hats, purses, scarves, sunglasses, and even a brooch, or all great ways to elevate an all black outfit.
You’re probably thinking, “well, that’s not all black”. But hear me out. That pop of color against a fully black palette will instantly draw your eye to that item. In this case, it’s my Candy Pink Coach Field Tote (that I also styled in 4 other ways in this YouTube video). Kelly Green, Mustard Yellow, and True Reds are all great colors that can also work with black.
With this look, I knew the shade of black in my top was deeper than that in my jeans (similar). But I tied it together by making sure that my shoes matched the richness of the top. If I were to throw on outerwear over this, I would try and make sure that the item was also a rich black versus a more faded black.
Wearing an all black outfit is all about balance. And once you do find that balance, you can feel confident in wearing a classic look!
