Establishing a Morning Routine

If there’s one thing I enjoy, it’s routine. I like knowing when things are going to happen and how they will happen. Obviously this is not always the case for every single day and I have learned to be ok with the variables that life tends to throw, but one thing that I have tried to keep consistent is having an established morning routine. It’s something that I started doing when quarantine orders were in place. I needed something that I could somewhat control in the midst of instability and this was one of them. And now that I am working for myself, it’s been more important than ever to keep at it. So, I’m sharing a few tips below on establishing a morning routine and hope that it provides inspiration for you to establish your own.

Set Your Morning Activities

The first thing I wanted to establish was what I wanted my morning routine to consist of. It’s different for everyone, but for me, I knew I wanted it to include working out, a cup of coffee and tea, devotional time, and a little bit of cleaning. Now, I don’t work out everyday, so there’s some variance there. But these 4 activities help to kick start my mind and get me ready for the day before I do any work. The order in which I do these kind of vary, but for the most part, all of these get done in the AM.

Stay Off Social Media

This is probably the main thing that I have incorporated in my morning routine. I try my best to not check social media within the first hour of waking up. I like to make sure that I have all my activities checked off before I start scrolling, but because my job is a content creator, there are times when I do post in the AM. So usually, I’ll just quickly go on Instagram, upload my first piece of content, and then do everything else before going back on again. There are some days when I wake up early enough that I am able to post my morning content after I do all my activities and it’s still in a reasonable morning hour. Hey, we aren’t perfect ok.

When Will Work Start

Since I am working for myself, I now get to decide when I want my work day to start. Some days it starts earlier than others. And I am still getting used to that part. But knowing when a work day will start also helps me to get a better idea of how much time I have to complete my morning activities above. This does not have to be set in stone, but I have found that having a schedule for the day can help guide how long my morning routines are. For reference, I usually start working (getting ready to film, setting up, etc.) between 11am-12pm.

Be Consistent and Intentional

The thing about habits is that they take a little while to become one. And it’s easy to fall off. It’s also normal. But that’s ok! The beauty is that you can pick yourself back up and try again, and again, and again. What I realized is that my mornings are for me. It’s a moment where I do not owe anyone my time, or energy. I can focus inward on what I desire, my needs, my wants, and properly think all of those through. Even as I share this post, I know I still have a ways to go in getting my routine on super lockdown. Give yourself grace, but be intentional.

Hope this helps in establishing a morning routine for yourself. I’m focused on intentionality and consistency for 2021, so we are in this together! Here’s to feeling better about our mornings and our days!

Until next time..
